developers' network - quick start guides to bootstrap examples

(Perfect for people with a short attention span, needing to get work done!)

There are 2 ways to shut a container down: the nice way (stop), and the not-so-nice way (kill). For obvious reasons, the nice way is recommended.

The key differences are:

  • stop - attempts to trigger a graceful shutdown by sending the standard POSIX signal SIGTERM
  • kill - as the name implies, kills the process by default (but also allows to send any other signal).

There's a great answer on Super User which expands upon these differences.

docker stop <containerIdOrName>

docker kill <containerIdOrName>
